Best method of using the QL

Following what @exwhy said
This is easiest to do with the maps gained from the Green Launches, as the flights use Owls.
There are 5 destinations, so 5 maps that are required.
The way that I earn them is as follows;
Fly Owl planes to earn 100/100 landing lamps.
Each flight while the map is active requires 17 fuel to fly, and 34 fuel for an instant return. 51 fuel in total for a single flight. You have 100 flights, so to complete 100 flights in the 3 hours the map is active will require 5,100 fuel. This is the same as 255 F20 barrels, or 102 F50 barrels. F20 can be gifted from your neighbours, but this will go straight into your fuel bar so choose when to accept it wisely.
Once you have enough fuel and resources, activate one map, and fly until you deplete your landing lamp supply. I would expect to get 4-6 collections per 100 flights, 6-8 collections if you use a Golden Dice bonus. (Note that the first time you fly this will likely be less, as you have 0 items collected for each collection, whereas I only need a single item to complete a collection).
Repeat this process for each of the 5 maps, and you will have 4-10 QL bonuses.
This sounds really painful to begin with, but once you have done this a few times and have a few collections already complete, it is a pretty painless way to gain QLs.

You can also put LL's in your name and have many stored up in gifts waiting to be collected to fly more fights during the map time.

How should I use it efficiently?

I have never used QL on my own, it is just a waste. We are planning to make a red QL party (4-5) on the weekend June, 20th-21st. We would like to make a multiple QL session with rights for QL holders to take 1st place (40 launches predefined 1st place, the rest just wild - first come first serve). Exact time and rules will be announced later on. This would be a great possibility for you to get the most out of it. We aim 60 launches in 1 hour, but exact number depends on the collections.

Just started this with my first outing to Berkeley - Managed 7 of that collection. Now a case of building up all my supplies to do the other 4 maps (when I get them!)

Good job Dave. I managed around 6 QLs too from green maps, more or less 6 collections for each destinations (100 flights each).

Trying to do the purple one now (from blue launch). Did 2 destinations, 110 flights each, I got 16 completed collections each. I guess Hawk has better drop-rate than Owl.

All use the same bonus of SC, SG, Dice.

Interesting to know. I haven’t flown the purple maps for years! They were literally the first maps I ever did, probably before I joined the forum. If you get more data over a longer period let us know. If the drops really outweigh the green maps, you may get a better QL to fuel used ratio.

Reading this thread was why i dusted off my second game again. Changed all the planes to owls to go after them QL's! Now realised it's going to take quite some time on my second game, so might give it a shot on my main game at some point as I seem to have most of the maps.

Also interested in hearing more about the purple maps.

So @Dave and @Barkmi4 (Mike)

I did another 2 destinations for purple maps. Both 110 flights with SC, SG, Dice. Completed 13 & 14 collections. Need to do 1 more to see, but for me it seems Hawk destinations have much better drop-rate than the Owl ones. All of these destinations were new to me. Never flew to them before.

To recap:
For Purple Map (110 flights each) with SC, SG, Dice:
Space Garden: 16 collections
Creation Myths: 16 collections
Orphans of the Sky: 13 collections
The Little Ones: 14 collections
Across the Universe: .....

For Green Map (100 flights each) with SC, SG, Dice:
Spacewalk: 6 collections
Test Pilot: 9 collections
Space Medicine: 9 collections
Astrochemistry: 8 collections
The Wonders of Physics: 7 collections

That's really interesting to know! Can I ask how much extra fuel was needed compared to the owl flights and additional items for flights?

Fuel for greens: 17 + 34 (speed-up) = 51 Fuel + Landing Lamp
Fuel for purples: 26-28 + 52-56 (speed-up) = 78-84 Fuel + AddRadar/SpWire

has anyone done anymore analysis on whether bonuses still add up on top of each other - saw some one on here saying they were no longer working as before - have you noticed any difference @VdW9

From what I see, since the change in bonus few weeks (months) ago, they still stack. Easiest to see from Guest Planes. When I only use SpyGlass, the drop for Baggage Tag for example is 1-2 drops from 8-10 guest planes. When I added Dice and Sky Captain, I get 4-6 drops from 10 guest planes.

I am not 100% sure though, need to ask people who have done a lot of Map Runs.

I invested in a fleet of 6 x S2 Jumbos some time ago. I currently have 40-50 maps for each of the destination to complete the Magnificient Desolation collection for my QL's. I activate map and fly the aircraft twice to that destination and nearly always complete a collection without using any fuel to accelerate. The only maps I now use fuel to accelerate the airplanes is the Alliance maps for S3 planes (the same 6 aircraft strategy works for adventure maps too).

It’s been a while since I’ve done a run - just done one now.
To Berkeley with +300%, 15 collections, 104 flights.
Rate seems consistent between green and blue launch maps.

Maybe you get really unlucky @VdW9 , or maybe I get really lucky 😂
I always seem to get a lot more drops from green maps than you.

I’ve never used a QL. Would you launch first then activate the QL bonus?
I always activate before however I believe that it will apply to your active launch if you activate after. The best way however is to use it in conjunction with another QL or two. A 2xQL launch will return in around 12 mins and 3x will return in under 3 mins. X4 is practically instant. Do make sure that you have loads of preps and fuel. Generally we complete around 30/35 launches before we start to run out of fuel or get cross eyed which ever comes first.
In short QLs are fun in a group with comms and tons of fuel at your disposal.

I haven't done it but @Ken Kyu Air tells me that if you have a launch going and activate a QL, your launch returns immediately.

The best use of a QL is to plan with other people who have QLs.

  • If there is one QL bonus attached to a launch, there is a 90% reduction in the time it takes. So 24 hours goes to 2 hours and 24 minutes.
  • When a second person on the launch also has an active QL, that reduces again by 90% - so just under 15 minutes.
  • When a third person on the launch also has a QL active, that AGAIN reduces the time by 90% - so just under a minute and a half.
  • When there are 4 QLs tied to a launch, the launch essentially returns instantly (well back by the time the animation for the launch is done).
Since launches can take a lot of fuel (3000 for red launches), it's best to have help anyway. Watch the forum for people planning QL parties.

it does not, not anymore. QL now works as Weathervane: each one decreases time by 90% of what’s left. And it still works that way if your QL ends during the flight and you activate another one.
