Attention as of August 2016: It seems that since version 4.7 (Android and iOS) it's no longer possible to return gifts from slots which are not available at that moment. The gift gets converted to Fuel(3).
Short introduction for people not yet familiar with slot hypothesis:
- giftable items are organized in "slots"
- every slot has one or more giftable items
- every game instance has all slots
- every game instance has only ONE item assigned from every slot. This is the item you can send.
- when you hit "send in return", you don't send the exact item you received. You send YOUR item from the slot the gift came from.
- not every slot is visible in "gifts/outgoing" at all times
- slot being hidden in "gifts/outgoing" has no effect on using "send in return"
Canonical example on how slots work is the Fuel(20) and Passengers(10) case:
Let's consider 3 people: you, Alice and Bob. You and Alice can send Fuel(20), Bob can send Pax(10). You send Fuel(20) to both Bob and Alice. They both hit "return". You get Fuel(20) from Alice and Pax(10) from Bob.
That means that Bob is fundamentally incapable of sending Fuel(20). He'll always send Pax(10). Exact opposite is true for Alice.
Many slots are visible only under certain circumstances. Good example are 3 slots for building 3 levels of Reserve Hangar:
You can never see all these slots at same time, but you can always return one item per slot.
So here's my first attempt, based on my low-lvl accounts and some people's signatures:

It's mostly incomplete and obviously has errors - let's make it right!
I think that flight items are the most invariant and should be used as orientation points.
