So just joined early last week, thought it will be a good game to pass the time. I am correct in that but also realise I'm in for the long haul. I have very little idea what to do and am just kinda pressing things and hoping for best. Trying to upgrade but coin production is slow. Any advice appreciated, thank you

Welcome, other already give good guide to start.
My advice is try to play on mobile as much as possible so if you play on PC use emulator.
Why? mobile have perk of double flight income so you can gather twice as fast.

If you have lots of time to play try to level-up slowly as possible and win event ranking cause lower level have it easier to win than higher level.

Helicopter actually good way for income gathering IF you play on mobile version (not recommend to do on PC)

How about PC? actually PC version have perks too that is daily bonus you can collect everyday that will gone later so farm it now if you can.

So if you can play on both device start your day login in PC version to collect daily bonus when you done with it change your device to mobile and play in there for the rest of the day.
