The second thing is stability and reliability. Missing items or points because of a slow internet connection should be less of an issue now.

don't be surprised if nothing is drastically improved just yet in terms of lags. The servers being down is part one of maintenance works, part two is the client side fixes that will come with 6.4 update in early March. Life should get better after that. At least that's what our lead server...
The plan is good, it's progressing good. It should be over later tonight if all goes well.
Airport City has crossed 60 million installs sometime last year, it takes some time to do anything with a database of that size.
The automated restore through App Store or Google Play will be with a 100 item limit, but if you do it through support team and your profile is older than the time this rule was introduced, you can ask to have it removed for your restored profile.
We review and update them based on any issue that goes unnoticed into the release, of course.
Needless to say, every time some big failure like this happens, it is an embarrassment to the whole team, and we try to reduce the number of those.

We've found the cause of it soon after your first reports to support team, so big thanks to those who filed it.
This was a nasty bug deep down in our database that wasn't noticeable under our standard QA procedures.
Our artists will be glad to fix some client and server issues, I'll let them know their efforts should be put elsewhere after a little bit of re-schooling!
Which is a way of saying that there're different people working on different things, and unfortunately we can't just take a year long break...
We're well aware of the server issues, but fixing them on the fly isn't possible. We're planning large scale tech server works for mobile versions in a few weeks. Nothing like space launches and neighbor visits will be available for a day or two. There'll be an announcement about those works...
Why would we want to make it better and less of a challenge if it's specifically designed as one of the hardest challenges in the whole game and an Easter egg at the same time? :)

The core difference I believe is the option to play both offline and online which is a major headache for us as developers and a major convenience for the majority of AC players.
In the single player games, paid or freemium, you fix the bugs you have, and you don't really care about cheaters...
How different operating systems treat time zones is pretty much a dark forest, and unless we had so many people who try to cheat this way we would abandon our protection system altogether. But then there would be much more players affected in a negative way than occasional glitches that happen...
