I understand your point, my point was it continues to build. You also earn coins from launches and more collection items from the launch chests that in turn earn more collection money.
It's all a win-win-win if you're looking for gold coins.

This is my rule also for launches I start.
My one rule If I join a launch, I won't pass the person that started the launch. Only exception is if they ask me too, it's almost expiring and we're not close, or a mistake (clicking before looking).
I am assuming just like the Age of Ash event, the fuel needed will increase as we get closer to the end. I don't remember what the final bonus fuel was for it, but I imagine this will be similar.

I've tried Mystery Manor, Tribez, and Transport Empire in the past - one thing they all have in common - G! games are very buggy.
AC takes way too much time from life anyway, I can't afford another time killer :)
If it updated the total, then it added the item. I am thinking the item did not grey out and looked like it was still available. This happens occasionally on my android launches when I add items too fast. It removes it from my inventory, updates the launch and my total, but the button still...
