Is there a way to merge the game I've been playing for a long time to the facebook version? My Ipad is going away soon and I dont want to lose all of the progress I have worked on.

No, not possible, as far as i know. But, as greensmith wrote inhere on forum several times, you can do an archive of the game via iTunes, and restore it later on same device or on new iPad.
Or, you can contact GI support and ask for so-called 'restore code' and you will be able to restore the game on new device. But to merge the games, nope... Maybe this could be a good goal for GI in the future. But for me would not be interesting. Like to have two different games on two devices.
