My laptop is about to pack up. How can I transfer both mine and my wife's AC games (she has her own login on the laptop) to a new machine when I buy it?

I would say you download it from the Windows Store to your new Laptop. Cause it is the same platform, i would say it will work

For both games:
Download, install, play till you have a new friend code.
Go through support and have your old friend code ready. Support will do the transfers, no loss...

The only thing I would add to this is to transfer one game at a time. Otherwise they get confused and you may end up with the wrong games being restored !

I learn a way just work for windows PC / Laptop can transfer it with a 60 second or less without contact GI and its legally 100 % i did it many time for test and few members know it here.
But the risk is if Gi update the game and new files download it then there is a problem if this file connected to Gi server
