I just went 6 hours straight to LA and Lima with bonuses and a whole bunch of fuel and finished the CW collection. I had to force myself not to give up, it was pretty brutal.

How many flights did you do? I got one item today, none yesterday. Still 1-4-0-4-4

Like SactoDave, I too am done with the Cold War collections. Over the past week I flew non-stop to Bali (1 plane), Los Angeles (4 planes), Lima (3 planes) and Iceland (1 plane). The vast majority of time I used no bonus.

I used a combination of bonus' 3 times...all were activated about an hour before the daily reset. During the bonus I added 1 turbo prop and moved 1 delta to the hanger.

Lucky Ticket, Secret Faucet, Golden Dice, Spy Glass, Weathervane, Business Class, Matryoska Doll, Lucky Cap

result was 2 drops (Iceland, Bali)
63 total flights
1800 extra units of fuel burnt

Bonus Combo 2
Secret Faucet, Golden Dice, Spy Glass

result was 2 drops (Los Angeles, Bali)
73 total flights
3000 extra units of fuel burnt

Bonus Combo 3
Secret Faucet, Golden Dice, Dice, Spy Glass, Weathervane, Lucky Cap

result was 3 drops * (Lima, Los Angeles, Iceland)
48 total flights
1900 extra units of fuel burnt

* the 2nd drop completed my event

During the past week I also got three drops without using any bonus. They were all the day the volcano erupted.

Regarding bonus packages, I chose some bonus' based on what would help my overall game since I was making a lot of flights in a short period of time (Lucky Ticket, Business Class, Matryoska Doll, Lucky Cap). I did not choose these bonus' because I thought they would improve my chances of a drop.

Weathervane and Secret Faucet were only chosen to keep planes in the air and to return them as quick as possible without the use of fuel catalyst (which I ran out of long ago).

That leave you with the standard Spy Glass, Golden Dice and Dice bonus which many of you are already using. (I did not have access to Sky Captain bonus, otherwise I would have tried that too)

My end conclusion is that it is all random drops that can come from any city. The use of bonus' did produce more drops for me, but how much of that being coincidence and luck, I don't know. I seriously doubt anyone flying to a single location without any bonus would complete this event.

Well...two weeks went and still have nothing to show on GoH and CWC. I have tried with a variety of bonuses but drop rate is not affected at all. On the plus side I have three starred Bogota. I am keeping 14 airplanes flying to all destinations burning thru my fuel stock for pretty much nothing.

My result is much worse.
Today I collected my first Gates Of Hell collection. (5-4-0-2-6) + 1 collected
For Cold War collection i have one item only. (0-0-0-0-1)
Wonderfull drop rate!

No any chance to finish this quest.

You need to be landing ten plus at once same as any other time you want drops.

I am disgusted, like everybody !
I have used Spy Glass and sent around 60 flights to several Cold War destinations, and i received NO Cold War item !
I have just one item !!
What helps ? @M22 says Spy Glass and Sky Captain ? is it better ?
You need to be landing ten plus at once same as any other time you want drops.
Can you explain please ? around ten same flights landing give you an item ??

An explosion already, really? I thought maybe that is how they were going to end the event and that was why no one could finish early, so that we all could witness it.
Any thoughts here?

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I read many of you are doing the event in a wrong way:
1. bonuses - looks like many of you use some bonuses and didn't use it wisely - it is always better to use 3 different bonuses at the same time then 3 in different times - combo
2. Fuel - when event appear - you saw that you will need to fly for cold war - you all have 2 good weeks to try to gather as much fuel as you can (regardless of the event - you should stash decent amount of fuel always - use this forum as help to join launches (this is the way to gather fuel).
3. While your bonus/es are active use planes but not wait for them to return - speed up the land (that's why you need a lot of fuel). It is better to do 50 flights to Bali (51 units of fuel for instant return - total of 2500 fuel) then do 50 flight during 2 or 3 days.
In my earlier post I mentioned adventure buildings - all of you who are my neighbor and who visited me knows that i have a lot of adventure buildings(70+) every day each building gives me one item drop - it's 70+ items drops per day - many of those drops are useless to me but every few days i got collection for bonuses - I have some bonuses I can use them daily without worry of will I have another one when needed. Also got few sky captains via adventure flights, so for example I can use sky captain bonus constantly for next 6 months.
2 things is needed to use bonuses effectively - fuel and passengers - fuel you can get from friends and launches (which is also friend dependent).
Passengers - put as many short round passengers building - if you have a lot of long term passengers refill building you are doomed - you send your fleet once and you are done for next 8-12 hours.
Every time duke is visiting your city buy one mystery bonus for 8k coins - we are all aware that recently there was a bug where you were able to buy endless number of those bonuses - but 100 of those per year are not bad. Since last big update you have additional option for that bonus by collection from visiting casino/bank/mints (some have it for long time).
Yes drop rate is bad - but with smart play you can rise your chances.
While my game was broken I tried to play the event (broken game does not have terminal, tower, town hall, flight academy, only few buildings).
I put few thousands coins in it - you can get that in 15 minutes in good red launch QL party. With 2 planes - 1 turboprop and 1 jet i completed the event
Advice - you don't need to go for more then 1 volcano institute - I stopped when finished 1st - other is waste of fuel if you are not chasing stars - fly only with turboprop.
Jet is needed for cold war when you are out of landing lamps.
