Activate a friend in need bonus which is good for 6 days. This gives you 10 clicks per visit, 120 a day.

Activate a spy glass an hour or so before reset time so you get 2 days of visiting on one spyglass. Visit 5 or so neighbors then click on all your own burnt trees. Then visit more neighbors because that will reset the trees in your airport for more collecting. Spyglass gives you more chainsaws, filters and plane drops so turn and burn those planes. This is why we save our bonuses. I averaged 50% or better in drops.

And now it looks like the city will be slowly destroyed by the volcano as roads crack, green grass turns grey, and the volcano gets bigger and possibly spews lava and ash. Plus the volcano destinations fuel costs are going up.

Yes this quest is hard, even for top players. Stop complaining, we asked for this challenge. Luckily some of us got casinos, banks and mints for green reserves. Keep saving your coins for a possible future purchase. Remember the basic game is free2fly and they do state every quest is possible to complete within the time limit. Good luck! B17

Yup, with Spyglass and Golden Dice one hour before reset allowed me to visit neighbors twice. It netted close to 40 Chainsaws and it turn gave me close to 30 Particule Filters (I was surprised). After this, I used all the filters along with lots of fuel and passengers, I managed to complete for 3 Institute of Volcanology and almost for the 4th. However, even with bonuses, I only got 1 collection item from burnt trees so I wonder if it is a bug, same for the Cold War collection which didn't give me a single item during the bonus timespan.

How do you get the Friend in Need bonus since it's not in any store ?

The friend in need bonus chest you can get from the sale they advertise sometimes. Also from flying alliance maps and making alliance collections. Yes I also have extremely low drops for the cold war (only 2 drops so far). Burnt trees collection drop is rare but I have already made one collection. Don't waste green on dice, spyglass is all you need. Also don't forget to click on your own volcano whilet spyglass is active. I've almost completed my first collection. B17

2 drops so far with all planes sent out to coldwar destinations. Making 3 collections will be hard enough compared to 10 for a slightly faster jumbo. Hopefully the drop rates change

Drop rate for Institute items increases with higher level planes and spy glass and sky captain. But Cold War items do not drop. I havent hat a single drop.

Friend in Need is a great bonus for this quest.

More than 50 less than 100. Got the drops on the higher end. I fly all filter flights until I have no filters. Then I fly just cold war flights. Only had sky captain and spyglass active. I thought the drops were never until I got the two. Flying falcons and giants. Waited until all were in hangers before collecting for better effect. Even if you don't have the friend in need bonus you will still get more drops with the spyglass.

Thank you for the suggestions guys. I have a sky captain bonus (got it about a week ago and have been saving it). I will use some of the 10 free greenies to buy a spyglass bonus since I do not have one. I hope using these bonuses will help the drop rate.

Does anyone know if using the spyglass and/or sky captain will increase the drop rate (chainsaw or other) when visiting a neighbour's airport?

Also, would it be best to use the spyglass and the sky captain at separate times or does using them both at the same time increase the drop rate even further?

I just noticed that my road sections are getting damaged. This means that buildings no longer produce coins or passengers. I don't NEED this happening to my city. I think I might just stop playing for the next 20 days until the event is over. I am NOT happy about this. I do NOT need to spend money rebuilding roads. I suppose I should be thankful they did not destroy any of my buildings (so far). GI support is getting notified about this.

I can't even figure out how to fix a road.

That's simply not true, damaged road sections are not affecting any of your buildings.

Try restart the game. For me works.
