of numbers e.g for how many flights must be done to get items, stars of a destination or number of visit buildings to get items from your buildings or from the one of your neighbours?
Or is this more or less by chance?

pure luck it seems. Some belief otherwise ( time of day, day of the week, star constellation, you name it....)

When you prep a flight to be sent out, tap on the stamp where the three stars are displayed and that will show you how many flights you've completed and how many you have left till you reach the next star level.

Items are completely randomized so if you have a coin, flip it in the air. Heads you don't get anything and tails you still don't get anything. Good luck!
