iOS How to "go back" on iPad?

I have always found Apple's single "home" button and absence of option to "go back" to be bewildering, so I have a question for iOS Airport City players:

When you have spotty wifi and visiting neighbours results in an intermediate state that puts the tablet / phone in limbo, how do you you go back to the game without exiting the game?

• In Android, you simply hit back button.
• In iOS I had to resort to double clicking the home button, and then swipe Airport City out.
  Then I have to enter game again.

Does anyone know how an alternative way to "go back" without exiting the game??

All of my games are iOS and I know exactly what you are talking about. Thankfully, it doesn't happen frequently. Your "fix" is the only way that I can get back into the game when it does happen.
