St Patrick is the patron Saint of Ireland. St George for England, St David for Wales and St Andrew for Scotland.
In Ireland it's a holiday, so the schools/banks are closed. Usually lots of festivies, cultural events take place as well
as hmm drinking Guiness

St Patrick is historically remembered as bringing Christianity to Ireland, he came as a poor shepherd boy from Scotland.
Legend has it that he drove all the snakes into a lake. ( that I fear is more to do with the damp soil but its a good tale)

The U.S. also tends to celebrate it with parades and wearing/drinking/eating anything green. (I've always wondered just how much green food coloring our country goes through in a typical St. Patrick's day weekend.)

Here in Spain it's celebrated the St. Patrick's day in the Irish pubs. Last night I was in several, like Molly Malone, Finnegans and Kitty O'Shea's. The holy patron of Spain is the Apostle Santiago (St. James in english?) and is celebrated on July 25.

I loved my day travelling from the Killarney to Wexford I managed to see a few local celebrations 11 years ago.
Now at home we celebrate our wedding anniversary, 6 years.
