Receiving Gifts Question

If someone can explain what happens when after taking a gift, the "send" comes up (sometimes grayed out, other times still active) and there is a timer with a different item showing. Also what appears to be a delete (X) showing as well.

When you take a gift from a friend, the item that pops up is the corresponding one on your gift set.
So, if you receive f20, then f20 appears. If you receive p10, p10 appears. But if you receive, say, plasma cloths, the item that appears is the one you are able to send, and it can be either plasma cloth, air magnetometer or Geiger counter. In your gift list there is only one of those. It happens the same with all building items, among others.
About the timer: from the moment your neighbor sends you a gift, you have a 7 days time period to take it and gift back. After that the info just disappears. The time shown is the remainder until it vanishes.
About grey vs live: if it’s greyed, then you have already gifted that neighbor on that day
