Following on from Gravity (2013) film recommendation - this award winning film, 12 Years A Slave (2013), is extremely powerful - winner of Academy Awards, Golden Globe and BAFTA's. I would very much recommend this film, it has stood up to many repeated viewings, during these past six years.

Following on from Gravity (2013) and 12 Years A Slave (2013) - this film, Road to Perdition (2002), made some 17 years ago, is another one of those films I have often returned to across all these years, a gangster drama film set in the American Midwest during the 1930s - with an impeccable pedigree and remarkable contributions from all those involved in the making of this film.

One of the greatest films ever made, Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai (black and white 1954), has influenced the work of many film director's. Recreated by Hollywood as The Magnificent Seven (colour 1960), this Japanese original still stands head and shoulders above any other film remake or interpretation.

Ace In The Hole (black and white 1951) - is the story of Chuck Tattum, a journalist who has lost his newspaper job, due to his drinking and womanising. While working in a small town, on the local newspaper, he is sent to cover a local interest story. While there he stumbles across a man trapped inside an old mine. His story about the trapped man, captures the publics imagination, and people start flooding into the area from all over the country.

When Chuck Tattum realises that the trapped man could easily be saved in a day, he decides to take advantage of the local sheriff, who wants to be re-elected. In return the sheriff convinces the rescuers to enter the mine, the long way round. Chuck Tattum believe it will take the rescuers a week and guarantees him a far better story.

Chuck Tattum wants his old job back, the sheriff wants to be re-elected and the trapped mans wife wants out of the marriage and money. In the end, it all ends badly for all concerned, not just for the trapped man, but also for the journalist, the local sheriff and the wife.

A genuine hard boiled film noir classic.

Last Train From Gun Hill (1959) - this is one of the great westerns, taut and masterful.

One Sunday afternoon, while out riding with her young son, US Marshal Matt Morgan's Indian wife is raped and murdered by two young men, Rick and Lee, who are both bored and drunk. The marshal's young son tells his father that one of the men responsible, was lashed across his face, with a horse whip, by his mother before she died.

The marshal believes he knows who was responsible, because of a saddle with the engraved initials 'CB' for Craig Balden. The marshal leaves town, on the next train. On board the train he meets a young woman called Linda, who is returning home, after spending time in hospital, recovering from a severe beating, by her former boyfriend Craig Balden.

The marshal's journey ends, when the train arrives in the town of Gun Hill, he has the saddle with him. At the station, he meets one of Balden's henchmen, who warns him of the trouble ahead, for stealing the horse and saddle belonging to his boss. The marshal tells the henchmen to go tell his boss, he is coming.

Renting a horse and buggy, the marshal travels to Balden's ranch, where they meet for the first time, in many years. During their meeting, Balden realises that his son Rick has lied to him, about the horse and saddle being stolen in a robbery. The marshal realises that one of the men responsible for his wife's rape and murder is Balden's son. The marshal realises that his old friend is the cattle baron, who owns the town, the people and the local sheriff.

Following the meeting the marshal makes his way into town, where he pays a visit to the sheriff's office. Following a confrontation, the marshal realises he is wasting his time in the sheriff's office, who has no intention of helping him. Leaving his office, the marshal makes his way to a nearby bar to plan his next move. There he meets the young woman Linda, from the train, who helps him, by telling him where to find the man with the scar on his face.

Making his way to the hotel, an opportunity allows the marshal to arrest Balden's son, who is gambling there with his friends. Carrying the unconcious body of the man, the marshal makes his way to the nearby hotel, he intention is to hold up in his hotel room, until the 9pm train. Balden arrives in town with his men to rescue his son.

At the hotel the marshal meets Linda once again, and asks her for help, he needs a shotgun. This is something Linda is reluctant to do at first, but finally agrees, after she is told about the rape and murder of the marshal's wife by Lee.

With much at stake, on both sides, the scene is set for the final showdown, which takes place, at the train station just before 9pm. Balden wants his son back, the young woman wants pay back from Balden for her time in hospital and the marshal wants justice for his dead wife.

There will be no winners, in this great classic western.
